Baltimore police officer charged with attempted homicide in York Township shooting

An 11-year veteran with the Baltimore Police Department was arrested earlier Tuesday in York Township on charges of attempted homicide and aggravated assault, police said.
The charges stem from 33-year-old Officer John Torres' involvement in a shooting that left a Baltimore resident recovering from multiple gunshot wounds Tuesday in York Hospital, said Sgt. Jeff Dunbar, a York Area Regional Police spokesman.
The shooting took place around 12:30 p.m. in a parking lot outside an apartment near 333 Brentwood Drive, police said.
Torres, a York resident, was wearing his police uniform at the time of the shooting, but he was off-duty, said Dunbar.
York Area Regional Police arrived shortly after the shooting and took Torres into custody after transporting 34-year-old David Hohman Sr. to the hospital with gunshot wounds to his upper arm and torso, Dunbar said.
Hohman was in stable condition as of Tuesday evening, according to a York Area Regional Police news release.
Investigators still were not releasing much information regarding what prompted the shooting, but Dunbar did confirm that Torres and Hohman were acquainted.
"It was a dispute between the two individuals — they knew each other — but that's about all we can release at this point," Dunbar said.
Torres, who joined the Baltimore Police Department in 2002, was assigned to the department's neighborhood patrol bureau at the time of his arrest, said Baltimore Police spokesman Detective Jeremy Silbert.
"That officer is currently suspended without pay following this incident," Silbert added.
So far only Torres is facing charges in the incident, but the investigation into the shooting remained ongoing Tuesday, Dunbar said.
